The legendary film director Alfred Hitchcock knew all about the power of suspense. And celebrities are following his lead this summer, with a sizzling show of hosiery. As the Cole Porter song, ‘Anything Goes’ has it; “In olden days a glimpse of stocking was looked on as something shocking ...”
Today, however, it’s not just a glimpse - it’s the entire stocking - if you ‘re out to shock. And it doesn’t stop there.
When the ‘It’ girl, Alice Dellal, appeared at the star-studded Louis Vuitton shop opening in London, recently, wearing an Alexander McQueen body-con ‘micro’, short enough to show her black fishnet stockings and suspenders, she had the papparazzi mesmerized.
She is hardly the only one. Rihanna, Lily Allen, Taylor Momsen and Kylie Minogue are just a few of the style-stars who have hooked up with the craze for sexy suspenders.
Selfridges has reported a huge boom in sales. The young designer Henry Holland’s “illusion” suspender-tights are the hottest hosiery ticket in town. And New Look are doing a bomb with their Rihanna-style “laddered” tights.
